For an authentic experience of Indochina, you can’t go past a Cambodia tour.
While history hasn’t been kind to Cambodia, the country’s contemporary incarnation is one that invites curiosity combined with a sense of awe, wonder, and respect. Stunning natural landscapes abound, including rural villages, gorgeous beaches, and thriving agriculture, now an important mainstay of Cambodia’s developing economy.
Unlike many other destinations throughout Asia, Cambodia is a country that is still emerging, a characteristic which lends genuine appeal to Western travelers. The country’s ancient and modern history is punctuated by challenges which have underpinned incredible feats of ancient architecture, art and resilience. Friendly locals are welcoming, eager to share the cuisine and culture of Cambodia, some of it integrated with more recent colonial influences.
Let's talkIf you’re planning the ‘essentials’ Cambodia tour, be sure to check these highlights off your list.
On so many levels, the vast Angkor Wat temple complex inspires and amazes with its architectural beauty, romance and impressive grandeur that must be seen to be appreciated: vast galleries, colonnades, libraries, courtyards and conical towers. Built in the 12th century as a Hindu interpretation of the cosmos on earth, its central tower is a symbol of the mythical mountain that is synonymous with Cambodia. It remains a significant Buddhist religious center today.
Yes, you must pass through Siem Reap to reach Cambodia’s most iconic site, Angor Wat, however a stopover here is essential. A launch pad for visiting other Cambodia highlights, including the Tonlé Sap Lake, Kompong Khleang Floating Village, Bayon Temple, Ta Prohm Temple, it’s the perfect place to gain a sense of how Cambodia is evolving. Thriving restaurants and guesthouses, floating markets, and the night markets combine to make Siem Reap a highlight on your tour.
As Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh is definitely an inclusion on your Cambodia tour. With much to see and do here, you’ll find plenty to fill in on a tour or three day city adventure. Visit the extraordinary Royal Palace with its many architectural and cultural treasures. Explore the Silver Pagoda and National Museum of Cambodia where you can admire the collection of 14,000 pieces of art. Take in Phnom Penh’s panoramic cityscape from the hilltop pagoda of Wat Phnom and visit the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, a sobering reminder of Cambodia’s recent tragic past.
Lest we forget a disturbing period of Cambodian history, this former school turned prison and interrogation facility which reminds visitors of the 17,000 plus people who suffered at the hands of the Khmer Rouge. With the building now serving as a museum and memorial, it is a demonstration of how far the people of Cambodia have recovered
At Kompong Khleang Floating Village, you can experience the most authentic floating village on Tonle Sap Lake. It’s here locals can be found making the most of their resources, as they’ve done for many generations. Located approximately 55 kilometers from Siem Reap, you’ll see sights along the way, and when there, learn how the village people make their living from fishing and other agriculture as they move about in their homes on stilts.
Gain a different perspective of Cambodia in Battambang, possible through the distinctive French colonial influence evident in the architecture. Battambang is also home to the Wat Ek Phnom pagoda and Prasat Banan, an impressive five-tower structure with resemblance to Angor Wat.
